This page shows you what freelance financial planning and analysis work is like: the pay, the services, and whether it fits you. The full guide inside the Digital Skills Library walks you through getting started: what to learn first, where to learn it, and how to practice until you're ready to offer it as a freelance service. Here's what unlocks for this skill:
The skill, straight
FP&A turns a business's numbers into decisions: models, forecasts, budgets, KPI dashboards, and cash-flow planning. Bookkeeping tells an owner what already happened. You tell them what to do next.
01
Answer the question every owner is afraid to ask
"Can we afford this? When do we run out of cash?" A good analyst answers that with a model an owner can trust.
02
Turn looking backward into looking forward
Bookkeeping tells an owner what already happened. A forecast tells them what to do next.
03
Build the financials a founder can defend
Investors ask hard questions. A clean, defensible model is often the difference between a "yes" and a "send us more detail."
Yes
You're analytical and numbers-confident, you enjoy turning a mess of data into one clear answer, and you think in terms of why a number is what it is. If you've ever rebuilt a spreadsheet because the logic bothered you, this is your lane.
Maybe
You're comfortable with bookkeeping but haven't yet built the financial literacy to interpret the numbers. That's a learnable gap, and the on-ramp from bookkeeping is real.
No
You like numbers tidy but don't enjoy the ambiguity of projecting them. If "it depends" makes you nervous, pure bookkeeping may be the calmer fit.
Best for analytical, numbers-confident, business-minded people, often from finance, corporate, or accounting backgrounds, who like turning messy data into a clear answer. If you're the person who reads a P&L and immediately wants to know why, that instinct is the whole job.
Pick a lane
Sell a specific, named build an owner already knows they need. "I build 3-statement models and cash-flow forecasts for SaaS startups" beats "I do financial analysis."

How the money grows
Four steps from your first model to an ongoing outsourced-CFO partnership. These prices are market averages, and premium freelancers charge well beyond them.
Starter
Financial model or forecast
$500β2.5K+ /model
A clean, well-structured 3-statement model or cash-flow forecast, delivered as a bounded first project.
Core
Budget + KPI dashboard build
$1.5Kβ5K+ /build
An annual budget plus a live KPI dashboard, the plan-vs-actual view that turns a spreadsheet into a steering wheel.
Premium
Full FP&A package
$2Kβ6K+ /mo
Ongoing monthly forecasting, variance analysis, cash-flow management, and a clear read on what the numbers mean.
Retainer
Outsourced CFO partner
$3Kβ10K+ /mo
Running a growing company's finance function part-time: forecasting, cash strategy, and the big money decisions. Everyone starts hourly; retainers come once your rate and portfolio are built (I teach them in my final course).
Businesses that have outgrown "I check my bank balance." You've heard every one of these:
People hire a freelance financial analyst the moment a fundraise, a loan, a cash scare, or a pricing decision demands a number they can trust. The client already feels the need for clarity; they need someone to build it.
The numbers
You'll see plenty of Upwork gigs asking a financial analyst to build a full model for peanuts, priced like a spreadsheet is a data-entry job. Skip those. The ranges below are an example of what average freelancers charge on Upwork in 2026, and they're a good reference while you're starting out. Inside FREELANCE with ERICA, you'll learn how to position your services for premium pricing over time.
Beginner
$40β75/hr+
Real financial literacy, one strong model you can show, often a bookkeeper making the climb.
Intermediate
$75β125/hr+
A specialization, repeat clients, and packaged offers, priced for the value delivered.
Advanced
$125β250/hr+
Outsourced-CFO positioning, a track record of decisions your work shaped, and ongoing monthly work that prices the judgment.
The real leap is what you're trusted with. A "spreadsheet person" charges hourly and competes with everyone. An outsourced CFO who builds the model and tells you what to do with it charges for ongoing monthly work and competes with almost no one.
One more thing, and I want you to really hear this: those ranges are averages, and averages have zero say over what you get to charge someday. As you work through my courses, you'll learn how to stack skills and position your services, so you can become a premium freelancer who charges above the market. Here's my own example: I'm a sales copywriter. Look up copywriters on Upwork and you'll see averages between $10 and $75 an hour. I regularly charge over $200 an hour for the same skill, because there are clients who happily pay for real expertise, and you only need a handful of them.

The highest-earning freelancers combine two or three skills, so one small project turns into steady monthly work.
Bookkeeping
The on-ramp, not a competitor. A bookkeeper who already knows a client's numbers cold is one step from offering this, at multiples of the rate.
Read the Guide βExcel & Spreadsheets
Sharper spreadsheet fluency makes every model and dashboard faster and cleaner. A directly reinforcing skill.
Read the Guide βProject Management
Budgets and forecasts are project management with money attached. Pairing the two makes you the operator small businesses wish they could hire full-time.
Read the Guide βPriced around the value of the decisions they inform, beginners realistically charge $40-75/hr or $500-2,500+ per model or forecast. Intermediate specialists offering packaged FP&A charge $75-125/hr+. Experienced freelancers positioned as outsourced CFOs charge $125-250/hr+, with ongoing monthly work commonly $2,000-10,000+. These are positioning-based ranges, so your real number depends on how you position yourself.
Yes. You don't need a CPA, CFA, or finance degree. What you need is real financial literacy and modeling skill, that's a genuine step up from bookkeeping, but it's learnable, especially if you're coming from a finance, corporate, or bookkeeping background.
Bookkeeping records what already happened. This work uses those books to look forward: forecasting, budgeting, modeling scenarios, and advising on decisions. A bookkeeper who already knows a client's numbers cold has a real head start moving into it.
Yes, and if anything it's worth more now. AI can draft formulas and first-pass scenarios fast, which makes plain number-crunching a lot less valuable. What's worth more is the judgment AI can't do: choosing the right assumptions and owning the call when a decision rides on it.
The fastest path is Upwork: look for bounded jobs like "build a 3-statement model" or "create a cash-flow forecast." Deliver a clean, defensible model with a clear read on what it means, and the next client follows.
